چکیده

This thesis aims at building a system capable of automatically extracting and parameterizing the position of a face and its features in images acquired from a lowend monocular camera. Such a challenging task is justified by the importance and variety of its possible applications, ranging from face and expression recognition to animation of virtual characters using video depicting real actors. The implementation includes the construction of Active Appearance Models of the human face from training images. The existing face model Candide-3 is used as a starting point, making the translation of the tracking parameters to standard MPEG-4 Facial Animation Parameters easy. The Inverse Compositional Algorithm is employed to adapt the models to new images, working on a subspace where the appearance is "projected out" and thus focusing only on shape. The algorithm is tested on a generic model, aiming at tracking different people’s faces, and on a specific model, considering one person only. In the former case, the need for improvements in the robustness of the system is highlighted. By contrast, the latter case gives good results regarding both quality and speed, with real time performance being a feasible goal for future developments.

Analysis and Synthesis of Facial Expressions by Feature-Points Tracking and Deformable Model

Face expression recognition is useful for designing new interactive devices offering the possibility of new ways for human to interact with computer systems. In this paper we develop a facial expressions analysis and synthesis system. The analysis part of the system is based on the facial features extracted from facial feature points (FFP) in frontal image sequences. Selected facial feature poi...

Using the Active Appearance Algorithm for Face and Facial Feature Tracking

This paper describes an experiment on tracking a face and its facial features in an input video sequence using the Active Appearance Algorithm. The algorithm adapts a wireframe model to the face in each frame, and the adaptation parameters are converted to MPEG-4 Facial Animation Parameters. The results are promising, and it is our conclusion that we should continue on this track in our task to...

Facial Feature Tracking, Extraction and Selection

In this report, first we explain how we moved toward implementing an algorithm for tracking facial features. The explanations, thoroughly covers our experiences, both our failures and successful trials. As a failed experienced of facial feature tracking, we have explained the correlation-based tracking and its improved extension. The second tracking method, is devoted to Active Appearance Model...

Face Model Adaptation using Robust Matching and Active Appearance Models

This paper addresses the 3D tracking of pose and animation of the human face in monocular image sequences using deformable 3D models. For each frame, the proposed adaptation is split into two consecutive stages: global and local. In the first stage, the 3D pose of the face is recovered using a RANSAC-based technique involving both the consensus measure and the consistency with a statistical mod...

Facial Features Matching using a Virtual Structuring Element

Face analysis in a real-world environment is a complex task as it should deal with challenging problems such as pose variations, illumination changes and complex backgrounds. The use of active appearance models for facial features detection is often successful in restricted environments, but the performance decreases when applied in unconstrained environments. Therefore, in this paper, we intro...
